On 22 February 2026, during a targeted military operation in the state of Jalisco, the Mexican Army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) — one of Mexico’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations. The operation, conducted in Tapalpa, Jalisco, reportedly included intelligence support from United States authorities, and Oseguera Cervantes was critically wounded in the confrontation and later died en route to Mexico City.
Following the announcement of his death, a significant wave of violence erupted across Jalisco and other regions. Gunmen associated with the cartel set vehicles and buildings on fire, mounted road blockages, and engaged in gunfire with security forces, disrupting travel and prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a stern alert warning U.S. citizens in key cities including Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Chapala to shelter in place amid ongoing security operations and criminal activity. Several major airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, and American Airlines — temporarily suspended or canceled flights to affected airports due to the unrest.
In Guadalajara, reports of gunfire near the international airport caused panic among travelers, airport officials later clarified that shots were fired outside the terminal area. Videos circulating on social media showed travelers reacting in fear as chaos unfolded in and around the airport.
Despite the security tensions, Beis Chabad’s across Mexico, from Cozumel and Isla Mujeres to Playa del Carmen and Puerto Vallarta, continue to serve as a source of light, support, and reassurance for thousands of travelers and local Jewish families.
Shluchim in the affected regions stated they are in constant contact with security authorities and are advising Israeli travelers to exercise extra caution and avoid non‑essential intercity travel at this time. “We are here for every Jew, in both physical and spiritual matters, and we pray that calm will return quickly,” they said.
Shliach of the Rebbe to Guadalajara, Rabbi Avraham Sarugo, described the scene: “Complete chaos. We went out this morning to go to a wedding, but then we started seeing buses on fire and cars burning on the roads. They are not letting people through. The cartel is creating a real mess — they want to show this is their territory. The whole city is dead; I’m going home and there’s not a vehicle outside.”
Shliach to Cozumel, Rabbi Dudi Kaplan, told Chabad Info: “Baruch Hashem, they are not targeting civilians but rather the government and the army, especially in Jalisco, which is far from us. Still, in our area, vehicles and stores have also been set on fire. Many gathered at the Beis Chabad to feel at home and safe; we provide food and communication so they can connect with parents and anyone in need. We hope that within a day or two this will pass, and American forces have also entered to help calm the situation here.”
In the Jewish community of Mexico City, leaders are monitoring the developments with concern but note that daily life in the capital remains largely normal, with increased vigilance around community institutions.
