The Department of Homeland Security has suspended TSA PreCheck and Global Entry as a partial government shutdown enters its second week, a move expected to slow airport security lines nationwide.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said TSA and Customs and Border Protection are “prioritizing the general traveling population” and halting expedited screening benefits. More than 20 million travelers enrolled in TSA PreCheck will now be directed to standard security lanes, while Global Entry participants may face longer processing times at U.S. airports.
The shutdown began Feb. 14 after lawmakers failed to reach a funding agreement for DHS. Several agencies, including FEMA, the Coast Guard and cybersecurity divisions, are also affected, with many employees working without pay.
Officials warn travelers to expect longer wait times until funding is restored.
The suspension comes as a powerful blizzard is already disrupting travel across the Northeast, compounding delays at major hubs in the New York area. Airports including John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty are facing widespread cancellations and weather-related slowdowns as heavy snow and strong winds impact operations. With both the shutdown-related screening changes and severe winter weather converging, travelers in and out of the region are being urged to prepare for significant delays.
