The announcement comes amid preparations for the Kinus Hashluchim 5786, highlighting Rabbi Caplin’s longstanding dedication to Jewish life in the region. Quintana Roo, one of Mexico’s 32 states, is home to popular cities such as Cozumel, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, and Bacalar.
The official letter from the government’s Secretariat stated (translated into English):
“By the authority granted to this Secretariat under the Organic Law of the Government of the State of Quintana Roo, Section 31, Subsection 18, and according to the internal regulations of the Secretariat, Section 71, subsections II and V — we hereby officially recognize the appointment of Rabbi Dudi Caplin as Chief Rabbi of the State of Quintana Roo, as well as representative of the Jewish communities in the cities of Cozumel, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Tulum, Bacalar, and Chetumal.”
The letter further noted that Rabbi Caplin’s community would be listed in the state directory of religious associations, in recognition of over 15 years of dedicated service promoting Jewish life, religious values and building bridges of peace, understanding, tolerance, and mutual respect.
“The government of Quintana Roo views you as a key partner in promoting social and religious harmony, as well as strengthening the values of justice, peace, and mutual respect.”
The official appointment has been celebrated by both government officials and the local Jewish community, marking an important milestone for Chabad in Mexico. Rabbi Caplin, who has worked tirelessly for local residents and tourists alike, will continue to expand Chabad’s activities throughout the state.
The local Jewish community expressed gratitude for Rabbi Caplin’s decades of devotion, highlighting his love of Israel, dedication to the community, and ongoing public service.
