Travel Alert: Historic Blizzard Threatens NYC Airports and Northeast Travel

A powerful forecast to bring blizzard conditions to the Northeast is expected to severely disrupt travel throughout the region, including at major New York-area airports. Cities from New York City to Boston and Philadelphia have been placed under Blizzard Warnings as the storm strengthens and moves up the East Coast • Read More

The storm is projected to bring more than a foot of snow to the New York City area, with some forecasts estimating up to 18–24 inches by Monday, accompanied by powerful winds that could create near-whiteout conditions and widespread travel chaos.  Emergency officials have urged residents to prepare and stay off roads unless travel is essential, warning that Monday’s morning commute and airline operations could become especially dangerous or impossible.

    Major Airport Disruptions Expected

Air travel in and out of the New York region is already facing severe impacts:

Tens of thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed across major Northeast hubs as carriers proactively reduce schedules ahead of the storm.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) — the tri-airport system serving the New York metro — are among the hardest affected, with airlines like JetBlue, Delta, American, and United issuing mass flight cancellations and advisories.

Officials warn disruptions at these airports could continue into Tuesday as snow accumulates on runways, visibility drops, and aircraft de-icing procedures slow operations.

In addition, coastal flooding watches and possible power outages have been issued for parts of New York and New Jersey due to heavy, wind-driven snow and coastal storm surge.

Roads and Commuters Brace for Impact

Beyond airports, the storm is expected to cripple travel along the busy I-95 corridor, dramatically affecting ground transportation — from highways to commuter rail lines — and leaving many routes impassable at the height of the storm.

Meteorologists predict the worst conditions from Sunday night through Monday morning, with heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel across multiple states. Officials continue urging travelers to monitor weather updates and check with airlines for the latest flight status before heading to the airport.
