New Jersey Chabad House Reduced to Ashes in Early Morning Fire
A devastating fire broke out early Friday morning at 185 Montrose Boulevard, swiftly engulfing a historic building that served both as a residence for Shliach Rabbi Yitzchak Lerman and his family, and as the vibrant Chabad community center for the Isles of the Meadows • Full Story
The blaze erupted around 2:45 a.m. on Thursday night and rapidly spread, ultimately causing a partial collapse of the structure, which was declared a total loss by firefighters. Assistance arrived from firefighting units across neighboring municipalities to battle the flames.
Rabbi Lerman, who has served as the synagogue’s rabbi for 11 years, said that he awoke to the sound of the fire alarm and saw flames outside his bedroom window. “The building was engulfed in flames within minutes,” Rabbi Lerman recounted. “I grabbed the children and we ran outside in our pajamas. I wanted to go back for the Torah scrolls, but the entire area was already consumed by fire.”
Miraculously, the family escaped unharmed, a true miracle. Despite this loss, the dedication of the Shluchim to their community was clearly evident: they already had a tent set up for their community’s Shabbat morning services, showing resilience and commitment to continuity even in the face of tragedy.
The community mourns the loss of its central hub, which had served since the 1950s as a synagogue and active community center, hosting prayers, programs, and summer camps.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not ruled out foul play, especially given the center’s history of antisemitic attacks. Notably, in January 2012, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the building, causing damage.
Rutherford Mayor Frank Nunziato called Rabbi Lerman “a pillar of the community” and pledged support for rebuilding efforts. Local community members and Jewish organizations have rallied in solidarity, launching fundraising campaigns to assist in reconstructing the vital communal center.
