Qatar-funded Al Jazeera, through its Arabic and Spanish divisions, attacked Chabad in Cozumel with a critical report targeting it over its ongoing support and rehabilitation efforts for Israeli soldiers and trauma support for Terror victims following the October 7th massacre on Simchas Torah.

The “report” focused on a retreat and recovery program operated by the Chabad Czumel soldiers coping with post-traumatic stress. Al Jazeera attempted to portray some participants as “war criminals” who had “fled” to Mexico and were seeking to generate public opposition to the initiative.

Rabbi Dudi Caplin, the Rebbe’s shliach in Cozumel and the chief Rabbi of the region, strongly rejected the allegations, describing them as a deliberate attempt to distort reality.

“The goal is to stir anger and hatred toward Israelis and toward the humanitarian work we are doing here,” Rabbi Caplin said. “But the Mexican people are warm and welcoming, and they treat individuals from all backgrounds with dignity and respect.”

Since the outbreak of the war, thousands of Israelis have visited Cozumel, including many soldiers who courageously defended the Jewish people and are now coping with the emotional and psychological effects of combat.

According to Shluchim at the Chabad House, retreat participants receive guidance, community support, and emotional assistance as part of their healing and recovery process. Despite the fake controversy sparked by the “report,” the Chabad House has made clear that its activities will continue uninterrupted.

“We will continue helping every soldier who needs support,” Rabbi Caplin emphasized. “We have seen people arrive broken and leave with renewed strength and hope because of the care they received here. This is a humanitarian mission, and we have no intent to stop.”

By publishing it in Spanish and Arabic, the piece was undeniably pointed to attack Chabad and draw anti-Semitism. Al Jazeera is known to fuel Jew-hatred in its reporting, especially in Arabic and Spanish; it doesn’t typically publish Jew-hatred-fueled reporting explicitly in its “premier” English division.
