Scare at Heathrow: Terminal 4 Evacuated, No Danger Found
London’s Heathrow Airport briefly evacuated Terminal 4 on Monday after a suspected hazardous materials incident, though the terminal has since been declared safe and flights are operating normally • Read More
The evacuation began around 6:40pm when emergency services responded to reports of a possible hazardous substance in the check-in area. Firefighters from surrounding stations, including Feltham, Heathrow, and Wembley, were dispatched along with specialist hazardous materials crews to assess the situation. Passengers were escorted away from the terminal, and foil blankets were handed out as the evening air grew chilly.
Around 21 people were assessed on the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, with one person taken to hospital. Police later confirmed that no trace of any dangerous substance was found, and none of the reported injuries were life-threatening. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of controlled precaution: specialist teams in white suits were seen entering the terminal, and airport staff worked to guide passengers to safety.
A Heathrow Airport spokesperson confirmed that the check-in area of Terminal 4 had been closed during the response but reopened shortly after 8pm. “Emergency services have confirmed Terminal 4 is safe to reopen, and we are doing everything we can to ensure all flights depart as planned. We apologize for any disruption and thank passengers for their patience,” the spokesperson said.
All other terminals at the UK’s busiest airport continued normal operations throughout the incident.
