United Airlines has announced a new premium economy seating option that replaces the middle seat with a shared table, giving passengers significantly more personal space while maintaining an economy-class fare.
The new configuration will be offered in a dedicated Economy Plus row aboard all 50 of United’s new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Instead of a third passenger, the middle seat will be permanently replaced by a large shared table extending from armrest to armrest, providing extra elbow room, two built-in cup holders, and additional comfort for travelers seated by the window and aisle. Passengers will also enjoy the three inches of extra legroom already included with Economy Plus.
United said the new seating option will go on sale later this year, with the first A321XLR aircraft entering domestic service this fall before expanding to international routes in early 2027.
The airline has not yet announced pricing but said it could eventually expand the concept to additional aircraft if it proves popular.
“We’re investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. “The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris but now also includes seats in Economy Plus with extra leg and elbow room.”
The announcement is the latest in United’s push to introduce more premium options throughout its fleet. Earlier this year, the airline unveiled its upcoming “Relax Row”, which will allow passengers to convert an entire row of economy seats into a couch-like sleeping surface on select long-haul aircraft beginning in 2027.
Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend among airlines to offer travelers more comfort without requiring a business-class ticket. While several European carriers have offered blocked middle seats in premium cabins, United says it will become the first U.S. airline to introduce the concept as a dedicated Economy Plus product.
