The Chabad community in the city of Kremenchug was among the well-known centers of Chassidus, home to distinguished rabbanim and chassidim whose avodah left a lasting imprint. Among them were several prominent chassidim named Berel (Dov), to whom this heartfelt niggun of longing was especially dear.
The 2 became known as the “Kremenchuger Berelach,” a title later explained by the Frierdiker Rebbe in one of his letters. He writes that during the period of the Rebbe Maharash, a number of prominent Chabad chassidim in Kremenchug bore the name Dov, including the chassid R’ Dov ben R’ Moshe (“Berel Moshe’s”), R’ Dov of Asiyiv, R’ Chaim Dov Vilensky, and several others.
The Frierdiker Rebbe describes them as men of exceptional intellect and inner strength — who would Daven at length with deep hisorerus and pleasant voice, and who were fluent in Chassidus. Their influence was widely felt, and chassidim from across the region, including Polish communities, held them in great reverence.
The niggun appears as Niggun 137 in Sefer HaNiggunim and has now been released as part of Project Ga’aguim — the Lubavitch Music Institute — dedicated to preserving authentic Chabad niggunim and reconnecting today’s generation with the emotional world of earlier chassidim.
