This niggun was composed by R’ Shlomo of Tchashnik, a Chossid of the Alter Rebbe and a Baal Menagen, who was the son of R’ Yisroel of Dubrovna and among the leading composers and musicians by the Alter Rebbe.
The Niggun was originally composed without words, and R’ Eliyahu Leib Rivkin, a descendant of R’ Shlomo, later explained the three Tenuos within the melody.
First Tenuah: The Heavenly Court informs the soul that it must descend into this world.
Second Tenuah: The soul protests and expresses its pain over the descent.
Third Tenuah: The final decree is sealed: “Against your will you live” – for this descent is ultimately for the purpose of a greater ascent.
Niggun No. 271 in Sefer Haniggunim.
