New York has approved the first Cholov Yisroel infant formula for purchase through the WIC program, marking a significant development for Jewish families receiving assistance. The approval follows a three-year campaign led by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (MET Council), which worked with state officials to make the formula available to eligible families.

The state is expected to add the formula to its official WIC offerings later this month, allowing eligible families to purchase it at authorized retailers. WIC provides nutritional assistance to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and young children from qualifying households.

The initiative was driven by the needs of Frum families who observe Cholov Yisroel and previously had no options when using WIC benefits for infant formula. MET Council CEO David Greenfield said the organization had worked closely with the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul to achieve the approval.

The approval represents the culmination of years of advocacy and is being welcomed as an important step toward ensuring that Jewish families can receive government nutritional assistance without having to compromise their religious observance.
