Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the cancellation of the traditional Lag BaOmer gathering in Meron, citing heightened security concerns amid the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon. The decision followed a series of high-level security assessments led by the Prime Minister.
According to a statement from the government secretary, the directive was issued following updated Home Front Command guidelines, which now limit gatherings to 1,500 people in frontline communities, including Meron and surrounding areas.
As a result, this year’s celebration at the resting place of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai will not take place in its usual large-scale format. Instead, it will be held in a limited, symbolic manner in accordance with current safety regulations.
Officials emphasized that the decision was driven by concerns over the potential for a mass-casualty incident, due to the proximity to the Lebanon border, the threat of rocket fire, and the challenges of evacuating large crowds under such conditions.
Further details regarding the adjusted format are expected to be released closer to the event.
