Kiddush Hashem: Ukrainian President Awards Highest Honor to the Rebbe’s Shliach
In a historic moment and remarkable act of public recognition, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, presented the country’s Presidential Order of Merit to Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Rabbi Moshe Reuven Asman, on Ukraine’s national holiday this week • Full Story
The prestigious medal is the highest award ever granted by the Ukrainian government to a rabbinic figure, marking a significant moment of Kiddush Hashem in the country.
The ceremony took place in one of Kyiv’s central squares, in a grand event attended by top government officials, military leaders including the Chief of Staff, the Prime Minister, and international guests — including Jason Greenblatt, the former U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace under President Trump.
Notably, Rabbi Asman had originally been scheduled to receive the award on Ukraine’s Constitution Day several weeks ago, but declined to attend the ceremony because it was scheduled on Shabbos. At his request, the presentation was postponed to a weekday out of respect for religious observance.
Before a national audience, with major TV channels broadcasting the event live, the award was finally presented in a formal ceremony, honoring Rabbi Asman’s extraordinary humanitarian efforts and leadership during Ukraine’s most difficult times.
