Kashrus Clarification: Trader Joe’s Baguettes Are Confirmed Pas Yisroel

After a brief period of confusion, Trader Joe’s baguettes are now confirmed to be Pas Yisroel, following clarification from the Montreal Kosher (MK) certification agency • Full Story

On 6 Av (July 31), a public service alert was issued notifying consumers that Trader Joe’s baguettes—labeled with MK certification—should be considered non–Pas Yisroel “at least for the next few weeks.” The alert stemmed from an earlier notice issued by MK regarding a bakery that had lost its Pas Yisroel status. At the time, it was not widely known that this bakery was behind Trader Joe’s baguettes and rolls.

Only in recent days did it become apparent that the same bakery was producing baked goods for Trader Joe’s, prompting concern among kosher consumers who are careful with Pas Yisroel standards, especially during the lead-up to the Yamim Noraim.

However, in an update released on 7 Av – August 1, MK clarified that Trader Joe’s baguettes are indeed Pas Yisroel. The initial confusion arose from a misunderstanding about which facility was responsible for the production. Upon further investigation, it was verified that the baguettes in question are manufactured in a Pas Yisroel–certified facility.

The clarification has been welcomed by kosher shoppers, many of whom rely on accurate and timely information to uphold their kashrus standards. Community Kashrus advocates expressed appreciation for MK’s responsiveness and transparency throughout the process.

The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of staying informed and vigilant regarding kashrus developments—especially with widely distributed products such as those sold at Trader Joe’s.

As always, consumers are urged to carefully check product labels, as kashrus certifications can change without notice. This is especially true in stores like Trader Joe’s, where sourcing may vary by region. A product sold in California may appear identical to one in New York, but it could be produced in a different facility under a different Hashgacha—or with no certification at all. Staying informed and checking for reliable hechsherim on every item remains essential.
