Consumers are being urged to carefully check the kosher certification on bags of Trader Joe’s Organic Yellow Corn Tortilla Chip Rounds after reports surfaced that some packages are now bearing an OU-D.

For more than a decade, the popular product consistently carried an OU Pareve certification. However, over the past approximately two weeks, shoppers have begun noticing bags marked OU-D appearing on store shelves.

According to a kashrus alert issued by Kashrus: Be in the Know!, bags carrying the OU-D symbol have in some cases been found alongside otherwise identical bags still bearing OU Pareve.

Frum Consumers who are careful with Cholov Yisrael, are therefore advised to inspect each bag individually before purchasing, as both versions may currently be available side-by-side.

The alert also serves as an important reminder that consumers should verify the kosher certification on every product they purchase, even items they have bought regularly for years. Kashrus statuses can change, certifications may be added or removed, and products that were once pareve may later become dairy or otherwise undergo changes in supervision.

This applies even when shopping in a kosher supermarket or other familiar store. Consumers should avoid assuming that a product’s certification remains unchanged simply because it has always carried a particular hechsher in the past.

Kashrus experts further note that identical-looking products sold in different regions of the country may be produced in different facilities and carry different certifications, or in some cases, no certification at all. A consumer who regularly purchases a product in New York with a trusted hechsher should carefully recheck the label when purchasing the same item while traveling or visiting another state. Although the packaging may appear identical, the product may originate from a different manufacturer and be subject to an entirely different kashrus status.

For this reason, consumers are encouraged to make checking the hechsher a routine habit every time they make a purchase, regardless of the product, store, or location.
