Reports indicate heightened military activity across the Gulf early Wednesday night, after explosions were heard on Iran’s Qeshm Island, as reported by an Iranian news agency.
Shortly afterward, Kuwait’s military announced that its air defense systems were activated in response to what it described as incoming missile and drone threats. Minutes later, air raid sirens were also triggered in Bahrain amid reports of additional missile launches.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later claimed responsibility for the strikes, stating that missiles and drones were launched toward Kuwait in what it described as retaliation for a prior U.S. operation on Qeshm Island. The IRGC said the intended targets were American military installations in the region.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) responded that American forces, together with regional allies, successfully intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. CENTCOM further stated that U.S. forces carried out defensive strikes against Iranian military infrastructure on Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks across the Middle East.
According to the CENTCOM statement, Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional targets. Two missiles reportedly aimed at Kuwait either missed their targets or malfunctioned mid-flight, while three missiles directed toward Bahrain were intercepted by U.S. and Bahraini air defense systems.
The statement further noted that U.S. forces also intercepted and downed several suicide drones targeting civilian vessels, and conducted additional defensive strikes against an Iranian ground control facility on Qeshm Island.
Authorities across the Gulf remain on high alert as the situation continues to develop.
