Two U.S. service members were killed and another remains missing after an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, marking one of the deadliest direct attacks on American forces in the latest phase of the conflict between the United States and Iran. Several additional service members were injured, with most later returning to duty after receiving medical treatment.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the attack struck the American military installation late Friday night. The identities of the fallen service members have not yet been released as military officials continue notifying their families.
Within hours of the attack, President Donald Trump ordered a new wave of U.S. airstrikes against Iranian military targets. CENTCOM said the strikes were aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten American forces and commercial shipping, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump described the deaths as “a very sad thing” and vowed that the United States would respond decisively to protect its forces in the region.
The latest attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict and brings the reported number of U.S. military fatalities since the war began earlier this year to 16, according to Pentagon figures.
