Rare Painting Shows Lubavitch In The Times of the Alter Rebbe

A rare painting from 1812, depicting the town of Lubavitch during the time of the Alter Rebbe, has been published. Created by artist Albrecht Adam as he accompanied Napolean’s Grande Armée on the 1812 Russian campaign, the painting provides a glimpse into the town’s history and its connection to Chabad Full Story, Photos

A recently published painting, created by artist Albrecht Adam in 1812, depicts the town of Lubavitch during the time of the Alter Rebbe. Adam was a Bavarian painter who accompanied Napolean’s Grande Armée during the 1812 Russian campaign, serving as an official artist to the Bavarian contingent.

The painting shows French soldiers in the area that would later become the site of the “chotzer,” a courtyard housing the home and synagogue of the Rebbe Maharash, as well as the homes of the Rebbe Rashab and Frierdiker Rebbe and the building that housed the original Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim.

While the nerve center of Chabad Chassidus had not yet moved to Lubavitch at the time the painting was created, the town did have a connection to Chabad, as the Alter Rebbe made three visits to the town as detailed in the Frierdiker Rebbe’s sichos.

The photo of the painting was discovered by a Russian researcher, who shared it with Rabbi Gavriel Gordon, shliach to Lubavitch and custodian of its holy sites. Rabbi Gordon then sent it to Rabbi Elishav Kaploun, author of a book on the history of Lubavitch and publisher of the “Otzros Lubavitch” biweekly publication.

Rabbi Kaplan featured the photo in the most recent issue of his publication, noting that official paintings such as this one served as an precursor to modern photographs and hold great significance for studying the history of the town.
