Celebrate Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz: A Festival of Liberation and Legacy

Now, for the first time, Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz presents Shiurim in English on all five Mugah Ma’amarim, the Rebbe was magia for the Chag Hageulah of Yud Beis-Yud Gimmel Tammuz • Full Story, Watch

By Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz, Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida

Each year, the Chabad-Lubavitch community around the world marks Yud Beis and Yud Gimmel Tammuz as days of deep personal and collective significance. These two dates commemorate the birthday (12 Tammuz 5640 / 1880) and miraculous release from Soviet imprisonment (13 Tammuz 5687 / 1927) of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, known affectionately as the Frierdiker Rebbe.

In a bold act of spiritual defiance, the Previous Rebbe refused to cease his work in Jewish education and outreach, despite the constant threat of Soviet persecution. His arrest in 1927 was meant to silence that mission. Instead, his release became a turning point: a public affirmation that the soul of the Jewish people cannot be crushed by physical oppression. As the Rebbe later explained, Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz is not just a celebration of one man’s freedom—it is a Festival of Liberation for every Jew, in every generation, who strives to live freely as a Jew, in body and soul.

A Gift from the Rebbe: Five Mugah Ma’amarim

To mark these sacred days, the Rebbe would often deliver and later personally edit (Magiah) Ma’amarim—Chassidic discourses—to elucidate the deeper spiritual meanings behind the events of Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz and their relevance to each individual.

Between the years 5746–5751 (1986–1991), the Rebbe edited five such Ma’amarim, each one a masterpiece of Chassidic thought, weaving together themes of divine providence, personal growth, inner freedom, and the enduring mission of the Jewish people.

Now, for the first time, all five Mugah Ma’amarim are available in clear and accessible English, taught by Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz, Shliach of Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers.

    Bringing the Ma’amarim to Life

Rabbi Minkowicz, known for his clear and engaging teaching style, presents these Ma’amarim in a way that is approachable for both seasoned students of Chassidus and those newer to these deep concepts. With real-life applications and Chassidic warmth, each lesson invites the listener to not only understand the Ma’amar intellectually but to internalize its message emotionally and spiritually.

“When we learn a Ma’amar that the Rebbe personally edited,” says Rabbi Minkowicz, “we are connecting directly with the Rebbe’s message and energy. These are not just historical teachings—they are living guidance for our lives today.”

    Where to Learn

All five Ma’amarim are available on Chabadinfo. And in video and audio formats, accessible through major platforms, YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Just search: “Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz Yud Beis Tammuz Maamar”

Each class is dedicated to one of the Rebbe’s edited Ma’amarim for Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz and is approximately 30–45 minutes long.

More Than Commemoration—A Call to Action

The Rebbe taught that remembering the Previous Rebbe’s mesirus nefesh is not just a historical reflection but a charge to each of us. We are empowered to continue his legacy—by strengthening our Jewish identity, deepening our connection to Torah and mitzvos, and sharing that light with others.

Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz calls on us to live as the Previous Rebbe lived: with courage, faith, and love for every Jew. Studying these Ma’amarim is one of the most powerful ways to answer that call.

Celebrate with Study. Transform with Torah.

This Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz, take the time to learn, reflect, and rededicate yourself to the mission of freedom, faith, and leadership that these days represent.
