Yad L’Achim held a moving Chanukah celebration for 120 women it rescued from Arab villages together with their children.

Chartered buses were dispatched all around the country to bring the survivors to the event, which gave women a chance to share their common struggles and experiences, and draw strength from one another. The children, meanwhile, relished the chance to talk and play with peers who could understand what they are going through.

The lighting of the Chanukah candles was led by Rabbi Chaim Zaid, an inspirational speaker and well-known educator in Bnei Brak, who showered the mothers and their children with words of encouragement. The Chief Rabbi of Tzefas, Harav Shmuel Eliyahu, who has closely followed the activities of Yad L’Achim for many years, moved the women to tears with his words of blessing.

“May the gates of great blessing be opened for you,” he began. “After the courageous act you have taken, and the heartfelt teshuvah you have done, you are deserving of all the blessings in the world.”

Harav Eliyahu hailed the work of Yad L’Achim, whose leaders and activists spare no effort in fulfilling the mitzvah of redeeming captives, of which the Rambam said “there is no mitzvah greater than redeeming captives.”

Yad L’Achim officials noted that the get-together, held on Chanukah, a time of miracles, was especially meaningful for the participants. The organization’s social workers, who joined in the celebration, said they were moved to witness the progress these women had made on the path toward returning to the Jewish people.
