Court Orders Immediate Halt to Work at Ancient Chabad Cemetery in Chevron

The Jerusalem District Court issued an interim injunction stopping all work at the ancient Jewish cemetery in Chevron, after the Chabad Rabbinical Court warned that construction was damaging graves in the historic Ashkenazi section. • Full Story

The Jerusalem District Court has ordered an immediate halt to all work at the ancient Jewish cemetery in Chevron, granting a request submitted by the Chabad Rabbinical Court.

The interim injunction was issued after petitions filed several months ago over work being carried out in the cemetery’s historic Ashkenazi section, which the rabbinical court argued was causing damage to graves and desecrating the burial site.

The section served Chevron’s Chassidic community some 170 years ago and is the resting place of prominent figures in Chabad and the wider Jewish community, among them Rebbetzin Menucha Rachel Slonim, and the leading rabbonim Rabbi Shimon Menashe Chaikin and Rabbi Hillel Moshe Gelbstein.

In his ruling, the judge found that the halachic and archaeological opinions submitted by the rabbinical court raised substantial concerns that graves were located beneath and near a ramp being constructed at the site.
