Dozens of Jewish travelers en route from London to Israel found themselves stranded in Varna, Bulgaria, following a flight cancellation. Rabbi Yossi Halperin, the Rebbe’s Shliach in Varna, stepped in to assist the travelers, arranging to host them and their families at the local Chabad House so they could spend Shabbos in a warm, welcoming Jewish environment.
The Chabad House in Varna serves as a spiritual center for the city’s Jewish community and the many Jewish travelers who visit throughout the year.
Established in 2003 by Shliach to Bulgaria Rabbi Yosef Salamon, the center is directed by Rabbi Yossi and Rebbetzin Racheli Halperin. It offers Shabbos services, Torah reading, Kiddush, and kosher meals by advance arrangement.
The hospitality provided to the stranded travelers reflects the important role of Chabad Houses in assisting Jewish travelers far from home, particularly when unexpected circumstances disrupt their plans and leave them without a place to spend Shabbos.
