President Donald Trump announced Monday a major change to the federal government’s childhood immunization recommendations, saying his administration will recognize a “gold standard” schedule centered on 11 core vaccines targeting what it considers the most serious and dangerous childhood diseases.

“Effective immediately, my administration is recognizing gold standard childhood vaccine recommendations for only 11 core vaccinations against the most serious and dangerous diseases, along with the MMR, which hopefully will be split up,” Trump said.

Under the new framework, the 11 core recommendations cover measles, mumps, rubella, polio, pertussis, tetanus, diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type B, pneumococcal disease, HPV and chickenpox.

Other vaccines, including those for hepatitis A and B, meningococcal disease and RSV, are being moved into categories focused on specific high-risk groups or individual clinical decision-making.

Greater Focus on Core Protection

The administration has described the move as an effort to concentrate the universal childhood schedule on vaccines that have broad international consensus and protect against serious diseases, while giving parents and physicians greater flexibility regarding additional vaccinations.

A Health and Human Services assessment released earlier this year compared the U.S. schedule with those of other developed countries and identified a group of “consensus vaccines” forming the core of the childhood schedule. The assessment said vaccines outside that core should generally be directed toward high-risk populations or handled through individualized medical decisions.

The new framework therefore does not mean that families are prohibited from receiving vaccines outside the 11 core recommendations. Rather, it changes which vaccines receive the federal government’s routine recommendation for all children, while leaving additional options available based on individual circumstances and discussions between parents and healthcare providers.

Administration Wants MMR Vaccines Separated

Trump also called for the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to be divided into three separate vaccinations administered at different times.

“We want it in three separate vaccinations, given at separate times,” Trump said.

The administration has argued that separating the components would give parents another option and allow greater individual choice in how children receive the vaccines. The CDC, however, currently states that there is no published scientific evidence showing a benefit from separating the MMR vaccine, and continues to recommend the combined MMR vaccination.

The administration’s broader approach represents a significant shift toward emphasizing parental choice and individualized decision-making rather than a single expansive schedule applied uniformly to every child.

The order also directs federal officials to continue examining vaccine safety and effectiveness and to pursue additional research, reflecting the administration’s stated goal of developing what it considers safer and more targeted approaches to childhood immunization.

For parents, the change means that the federal recommendations will place greater emphasis on a defined group of core childhood vaccines, while decisions about additional vaccines can increasingly be made according to a child’s health, circumstances and family preferences in consultation with medical professionals.

The administration has presented the policy as part of a broader effort to restore confidence in America’s healthcare system, reduce unnecessary interventions and ensure that parents have a greater role in decisions affecting their children.
