Smotrich Announces End to Chevron Planning Restrictions
In a significant development for the Jewish community in Chevron, a decision initiated by Finance Minister and Minister in the Defense Ministry Bezalel Smotrich has now been fully implemented, ending planning and construction arrangements established under the ‘Hebron Agreement’ • Read More
Speaking during the inauguration of the new community of Doran in the Chevron Hills, Smotrich revealed that authorities had completed a process transferring all planning and construction powers previously granted to the Chevron municipality under the agreement.
The move follows a cabinet decision approved several months ago at Smotrich’s initiative. During a meeting of the Higher Planning Council in Judea and Samaria, the final measures required to implement the decision were formally approved.
As a result, planning and construction authority for the Jewish community in Chevron and at holy sites, including the Me’aras Hamachpelah, will no longer be subject to the jurisdiction of the Chevron municipality and will instead fall under the direct responsibility of the Israeli government.
“Now it can be revealed: yesterday we canceled the ‘Hebron Agreements’,” Smotrich declared. “For many years, one of the most absurd remnants of Oslo remained in place, with authority over the Jewish community in Chevron and the holy sites dependent on the Chevron municipality. Yesterday we put an end to that.”
He added that the decision represents “far more than a planning measure,” describing it as “a historic correction” and part of broader efforts to strengthen Jewish settlement, governance, and Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria.
The decision marks another step in strengthening the Jewish presence in Chevron, one of Judaism’s four holy cities and home to the Me’aras Hamachpelah, the resting place of the Avos and Imahos.
