In a festive ceremony held Tuesday morning in Chevron, the local Chabad of Hebron inaugurated the first stage of its new visitor center, “Sdei Hamachpeilah,” a major educational and tourism initiative located across from Me’aras Hamachpeilah. The project is designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of the city’s rich Jewish history and its enduring connection to the Jewish people throughout the generations.

Among those participating in the dedication ceremony were Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Settlements and National Missions Minister Orit Strook, Kiryat Arba-Chevron Council Head Israel Bramson, Chevron Council Head Eyal Gelman, and Chevron Chief Rabbi Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Schwartz.

The first phase of the center, housed inside the historic Gutnick Building, features an advanced multimedia presentation including video productions and visual simulations portraying the story of Chevron and its Jewish community from the times of the Avos until today. A special emphasis is placed on the long-standing historical connection between Chabad and the city.

Organizers noted that the bond between Chabad and Chevron stretches back generations — from the Alter Rebbe, who supported the Jewish community financially, to the Mitteler Rebbe, who purchased property in the city and strongly encouraged strengthening the Jewish presence there. In one well-known letter, the Mitteler Rebbe wrote: “Therefore, whoever is for Hashem should not hold back his wealth and should strengthen the settlement of Anash in the holy city of Chevron.”

According to the organizers, many visitors currently come only to Me’aras Hamachpeilah, while the new project seeks to expose them to the city’s many additional historic sites, including the ancient Jewish cemetery and the resting place of Rebbetzin Menucha Rochel.

The initiative is being led by Rabbi Danny Cohen and Chabad of Hebron with significant private support and assistance from Israel’s Heritage Ministry.

“For generations, the Rabbeim of Chabad encouraged and supported the Jewish settlement in Chevron,” Rabbi Cohen said. “Today we inaugurated the first section of this new center, which allows visitors from all backgrounds to connect to the city’s historic sites, its story, and the deep Jewish connection to this holy place.”
