Shabbos-Safe: Kosel Metal Detectors Upgraded
Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, Rav of the Kosel and Holy Sites, has announced a new Psak Halacha bringing good news to Frum Yidden: it is now permissible to pass through the Kosel entrance gates on Shabbos even according to the strictest opinions, without concern of Chilul Shabbos • Full Article
The announcement follows technological upgrades by the Kosel Heritage Foundation, which modified the metal detectors at the gates. The system now runs on a fixed, low current, so passing through does not trigger any lights or alarms, in accordance with the opinion of Rav Ovadia Yosef, Z”L.
Rabbi Rabinowitz explained that the detectors measure metal via a magnet—the more metal a person carries, the more the needle moves. Security staff monitor the system and only check individuals if the needle moves beyond the threshold.
The Halacha regarding entry through these gates was confirmed over 20 years ago by prominent poskim including Rav Yehoshua Neubert, Z”L, Rav Moshe Halberstam, Z”L, and Rav Avigdor Nebenzahl, Shlita, and no changes had been made until the current upgrades. Rav Moshe Sternbuch, Shlita, also ruled that entering does not constitute a prohibition, though those who wish to be extra stringent may enter with no metal on their person.
Under the new system, even according to the Machmirim, small items like watches, glasses, a single key, or a small belt buckle do not affect the detector, allowing safe entry. Larger items, such as a Tallis crown, may influence the detector, and those concerned should avoid carrying them.
Rav Avigdor Nebenzahl Shlita, and Rav Yosef Yekusiel Efrati, Shlita, who recently inspected the gates, both confirmed that the system is halachically acceptable for Frum Yidden on Shabbos.
The Kosel Heritage Foundation expressed satisfaction that the issue has been clarified, allowing Frum Yidden to enter through the gates on Shabbos and Yomim Tovim without worry.
