New York City Subway Bids Farewell to the MetroCard

After more than three decades, New York City’s MetroCard will be retired, with the last day to buy or refill one set for December 31, 2025. The MTA is fully transitioning to OMNY, a contactless payment system that allows riders to tap a credit card, phone, or other smart device to pay fares • Read More

Introduced in 1994, the MetroCard replaced subway tokens and quickly became an iconic part of New York. The gold-hued card and its magnetic strip will now join the tokens in retirement.

OMNY, which launched in 2019, now handles more than 90% of subway and bus trips. Riders can also purchase reloadable OMNY cards, and existing MetroCards will continue to work into 2026 to use remaining balances.

The change is expected to save the MTA at least $20 million annually and introduces weekly fare caps, with unlimited rides after 12 trips costing up to $35.

While many riders embrace the new system, some, particularly older commuters, express nostalgia for the MetroCard and concerns about adapting to the new machines.
