The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced plans to make five Brooklyn subway stations ADA-accessible, with new elevators and major station improvements funded through New York’s congestion pricing program.
The stations selected for upgrades are Neptune Avenue (F), 18 Avenue (N), Jefferson Street (L), Nostrand Avenue (A/C), and Fort Hamilton Parkway (D).
Depending on the station, the project will include between one and three new elevators, along with platform repairs, staircase replacements, improved fare gates, and additional safety and security enhancements.
According to the MTA, four of the stations were selected to close long gaps between accessible stops, while the busy Nostrand Avenue express station was chosen because of its high ridership and importance as a major commercial hub.
The accessibility projects are being funded through revenue generated by New York City’s congestion pricing program, which is providing $15 billion for transit improvements under the MTA’s capital plan.
Since 2020, the MTA has completed accessibility upgrades at 60 subway stations, bringing the total number of fully accessible stations across the system to 160.
The MTA expects to award the design-build contract by the end of the year, with proposals from contractors due in September.
