The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expanding its open-stroller program across the city, with designated stroller spaces expected to be installed on nearly all of its roughly 6,000 buses by the end of the year. The expansion will allow parents and caregivers to board with strollers unfolded, giving families a safer and more convenient way to travel with young children.

The program, launched as a pilot in 2022, initially placed designated stroller areas on about 175 buses across seven routes. In 2023, the MTA expanded the initiative to more than 1,000 buses serving 57 routes throughout all five boroughs. More than 80% of customer feedback on the program was positive.

The designated areas are designed to allow a child to remain secured in an unfolded stroller while the bus is moving. Depending on the bus model, the space can be an open area near the rear door or an area created by folding up two adjacent seats. The stroller space is separate from priority seating reserved for passengers with disabilities.

The initiative addresses a longstanding challenge for parents using city buses. Under the traditional arrangement, parents often had to remove their child and fold the stroller before boarding, making it difficult to manage a young child and other belongings while navigating a crowded bus.

The MTA’s expansion is also intended to make the system more accessible to families while maintaining priority space for passengers with disabilities. The agency has been evaluating different seating configurations and gathering feedback from parents, caregivers, disability advocates and bus operators as the program has expanded.

The full rollout will bring designated stroller spaces to local and Select Bus Service routes across New York City, giving parents significantly more flexibility when traveling with young children.
