We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Mrs. Shifra Nicha Schanowitz, a longtime Crown Heights resident and the matriarch of a large Lubavitch family. She passed away on Sunday, 19 Av, 5783.
Shifra Nicha Schanowitz (nee From) was the wife of R’ Azriel Schanowitz a”h, a Chosid who was involved in Kehot, the publishing arm of Chabad-Lubavitch. Their home in Crown Heights was always open and filled with guests from all backgrounds.
She was the mother of 12 children, nearly all of whom are on Shlichus around the US and the world.
She is survived by her children: Rabbi Yosef Schanowitz – Highland Park, IL; Rabbi Mayer Schanowitz – Chicago, IL; Mrs. Leah Engel – Denver, CO; Mrs. Shterna Edelman – Brunoy, France; Mrs. Rivkah Vogel – San Jose, CA; R’ Levi Schanowitz – Crown Heights; Mrs. Rochel Polter – Oak Park, MI; Rabbi Shmuel Schanowitz – Buffalo, NY; Rabbi Yisroel Schanowitz – Las Vegas, NV; R’ Chaim Schanowitz – San Deigo, CA; and Mrs. Nechama Dina Gansburg – Aubervilliers, France, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rabbi Azriel Schanowitz in 2016 and daughter, Mrs. Hindy Scheiman in 2013.
The Levaya will take place today, Sunday at 3 pm today passing by 770 and 4 pm at Montefiore Cemetery.
Shiva will take place at 686 Montgomery St.
