Fifteen years have passed since the inauguration of the Shul at Moscow’s historic and well-known Butyrka detention center, marking a significant milestone in Jewish life behind its walls.

Once a place where prominent Chassidim were imprisoned, including the renowned Shapira brothers of Slavita, Butyrka today is home to ongoing Jewish activity and spiritual support for Jewish inmates.

The Shul serves as a center for regular Shiurei Torah, Mivtza tefillin, and more. Throughout the years, Russia’s Chief Rabbi, Berel Lazar, has visited the facility for special occasions, including Chanukah candle-lighting ceremonies, while dedicated volunteers continue to assist inmates each week with putting on tefillin and strengthening their connection to Yiddishkeit.

The activists expressed heartfelt appreciation to philanthropist Rabbi Yehuda Davidov, chairman of the 770 Charity Foundation in Russia, for his ongoing support of the project. Special thanks were also extended to prison chaplain Rabbi Aharon Gurevich, whose dedication over many years helped overcome numerous challenges and played a key role in establishing and expanding the Shul’s activities.

Fifteen years later, the Shul stands as a powerful symbol of the revival of Jewish life in a place associated with hardship and persecution, bringing Torah, tefillah, and hope to Jews even behind prison walls.
