As summer brings warmth and growth across Russia, another kind of flourishing continues to spread throughout the vast country: the remarkable renaissance of Jewish life.
In places where the communist regime once sought to uproot every expression of Judaism, thriving communities of Torah and Chassidus now stand as living testimony to the revival of Jewish life throughout Russia.
That revival was on full display last week as bochurim from the Mesivta in Moscow embarked on a historic “Shabbos Shlichus”, traveling to communities across the country to strengthen Yiddishkeit and bring the warmth of Torah and Chassidus to Jews living far from major Jewish centers.
The ambitious initiative was carried out under the guidance and personal oversight of Russia’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Berel Lazar, who closely followed the preparations and encouraged the participants before their departure.
The bochurim traveled to more than twenty cities throughout Russia, covering thousands of miles by plane, train, and car. The large-scale logistical operation included numerous groups dispatched to communities across the country, some undertaking lengthy journeys to reach even the most remote locations.
One group traveled to Nalchik, a city with a large Muslim population, accompanied by security personnel to ensure their safety while carrying out their mission.
Throughout the weekend, the bochurim worked together with local Shluchim and community rabbis, leading classes, farbrengens, Shabbos meals, and a wide range of Jewish programming.
The impact was extraordinary. Hundreds of Jews put on tefillin, special Bar Mitzvah celebrations were arranged for local Jews reconnecting with their heritage, and 96 Mezuzos were affixed to Jewish homes.
The initiative received significant support from Keren 770, headed by philanthropist Rabbi Yehuda Davidov. The mission was coordinated by the yeshivah administration, led by Rosh Yeshivah Rabbi Moshe Lerman, Campus Lichtenfeld Director Rabbi Yosef Moshe Weisberg, and Yeshivah Director Rabbi Chaim Moshe Weber, together with the student Shluchim who ensured that every community enjoyed a meaningful and inspiring Shabbos experience.
Prior to the trip, Rabbi Lazar sent two special letters. In his message to the bochurim, he emphasized their responsibility as representatives of the Rebbe and shared inspiring stories illustrating how the appearance, conduct, refinement, and joy of a Chossid can leave a lifelong impression on another Jew.
In a separate letter addressed to the host communities, Rabbi Lazar encouraged participants to draw inspiration from the visiting bochurim and use the opportunity to strengthen their connection to Torah and Mitzvos, emphasizing the lesson of Pesach Sheini—that it is never too late to grow spiritually.
As Shabbos came to a close, emotional farewells took place in community after community. Following uplifting Farbrengens, heartfelt prayers, and meaningful interactions throughout the weekend, many local participants expressed deep gratitude for the inspiration and encouragement they had received.
The impact of the mission continues to resonate across Russia, with communities already reporting renewed enthusiasm for Jewish learning and observance. The hope is that the sparks ignited during this special Shabbos will continue to grow, strengthening Jewish life throughout Russia and preparing the world for the coming of Moshiach.
