Nearly a year after the horrific terrorist attack at Chabad’s Chanukah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australian police have charged a 46-year-old man accused of falsely claiming he was injured in the attack in an attempt to collect compensation intended for victims and their families.
According to NSW Police, the man claimed he had been injured in the December 14, 2025 shooting, in which 15 people were murdered and approximately 40 others wounded. Police allege he subsequently submitted fraudulent compensation claims.
The suspect was arrested at Parramatta Police Station on October 27 and charged with publishing false or misleading material to obtain a financial advantage, as well as making a false representation that led to a police investigation. He was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court on November 18.
Following his release, Australian immigration authorities reportedly detained him over an alleged visa overstay.
Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, condemned the alleged fraud, calling it despicable, particularly as police resources remain critical to protecting the Jewish community amid ongoing security concerns.
Meanwhile, proceedings against the surviving terrorist, have been adjourned until February 24, 2027. He faces 78 charges, including 15 counts of murder and 43 counts of attempted murder.
