Hungarian fighter jets were scrambled last week to intercept and escort an Israeli passenger plane after air traffic controllers temporarily lost contact with the aircraft while it was flying through Hungarian airspace. The incident ended safely, with the flight continuing to its destination without further complications.
The aircraft, an Airbus A321 operated by Israeli airline Arkia, was en route from Tel Aviv to Prague when Hungarian air traffic controllers were unable to establish radio contact with the flight. In accordance with NATO air-policing procedures, Hungary dispatched two JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets to identify the aircraft and restore communication.
According to Hungarian officials, the incident triggered NATO’s highest alert level for such situations. Shortly after the fighter jets reached the aircraft and established visual contact, communication between the flight crew and Hungarian air traffic control was restored. The fighter jets then escorted the plane until it exited Hungarian airspace and continued toward its destination.
Arkia stated that the flight crew operated according to the approved flight plan and emphasized that at no point were the passengers, crew, or aircraft in danger. The airline said the incident is being reviewed internally and in coordination with the relevant authorities.
The aircraft landed safely in Prague as scheduled, bringing the unusual incident to a peaceful conclusion.
