Historic: Knesset Passes Death Penalty Law for Terrorists

In a historic move, the Knesset approved the death penalty law for terrorists in its second and third readings, officially adding it to Israel’s law books • Read More

The bill, initiated by MK Limor Son Har-Melech and led by Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, establishes that any terrorist who intentionally causes the death of a person as part of an act of terror will be sentenced to death.

Among the key provisions of the law:

    • A mandatory death sentence in Judea and Samaria, without requiring a unanimous ruling.

    • The sentence will be carried out by hanging under the authority of the prison service.

    • The execution must be implemented within a defined timeframe of up to 90 days.

    • No possibility of clemency.

The law was advanced through the National Security Committee headed by MK Tzvika Fogel, as part of broader efforts to strengthen deterrence and expand Israel’s tools in combating terrorism.

Several members of Knesset, including Meir Porush and Yitzchok Goldknopf of United Torah Judaism, as well as Avi Maoz of Noam, abstained from the vote.

Minister Ben-Gvir responded: “Shehecheyanu v’kiyemanu v’higiyanu lazman hazeh. We promised and we delivered. Israel is changing the rules of the game: one who murders Jews will no longer continue to live and benefit from prison conditions. This is a day of justice for the victims and a day of deterrence for our enemies. No more revolving door for terrorists, only a clear decision. Whoever chooses terror chooses death. Am Yisroel Chai.”

MK Tzvika Fogel, chairman of the committee, emphasized that the law is not one of revenge, but of responsibility: “In a reality where Israel faces murderous terror, our duty is clear—to protect our citizens not with slogans, but with action. This law adds an important deterrent tool and sends a clear message: those who choose terrorism to murder innocent Jews will face death.”

MK Limor Son Har-Melech called the legislation a historic turning point: “No longer a cycle of murder, imprisonment, and release in deals, but a clear determination: one who chooses to murder Jews forfeits the right to live. This is a message of justice, deterrence, and national responsibility.”

She added on a personal note, referencing her own loss to terror, that the law represents a commitment to preventing future attacks: “This is a day in which Israel chose life.”
