The bill to dissolve Israel’s 25th Knesset passed its first reading in the Knesset plenum overnight Tuesday, receiving overwhelming support with 106 votes in favor and no opposition.
Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz, who submitted the legislation, said following the vote that the likely window for new elections would fall between September 8, 2026 (26 Elul 5786) and October 20, 2026 (9 Cheshvan 5787).
With the first reading now completed, the bill will return to the House Committee for further preparation before being brought back to the Knesset for its second and third readings. The exact election date will only be determined once the legislation receives final approval.
The latest development comes two weeks after the Knesset approved 13 separate preliminary bills seeking to dissolve the parliament, proposals that were submitted by both coalition and opposition factions.
While opposition parties supported all of the dissolution proposals, coalition leaders ultimately decided to advance only their own bill, alongside a proposal submitted by the Blue and White faction.
The vote formally sets in motion the legislative process that would bring Israel to another national election, though several procedural steps remain before the Knesset is officially dissolved and a final election date is set.
