Leibel Lazarov, who displayed extraordinary courage during the Chanukah terror attack at Bondi Beach in Australia, was awarded the Key to the City of Sydney this week in official recognition of his heroism. Leibel, whose family serves as shluchim in Texas, was himself spending the year in Sydney as a student rabbi assisting the local Chabad community when the attack occurred.
During the terror attack, Leibel rushed toward the active shooting scene, assisting a police officer who was critically wounded. In the process, he was shot and severely injured.
With open miracles, Leibel survived his critical injuries after undergoing nearly a dozen surgeries during a lengthy and complex hospitalization. Doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize his condition and aid in his recovery, while family, friends, and communities around the world prayed for his healing.
Approximately two months after the attack, Leibel reached a significant milestone in his recovery, as he was able to board a plane together with his family and return home to Texas, where their community eagerly awaits them.
The Key to the City was presented to Leibel during an emotional ceremony held by the Waverley Council, where city officials and community leaders praised his bravery and selflessness. They noted that his actions in rushing toward danger to save another person embodied the highest ideals of courage, responsibility, and the victory of light over terror.
