JERUSALEM — A 20-year-old Arab youth from the Israeli Arab village of Kafr Qassem called police and asked for their help in a violent incident. However when police arrived the youth, Nassem Badir, took out a gun and tried to shoot at the policeman, who took cover. Badir then drove his car out backwards and attempted to ram other policemen, who neutralized him. Border police are treating the incident as a nationalistically-motivated terrorist attack, although Badir’s family members insist that this was not his intention.

Three police officers were lightly injured wounded after being rammed by Badir’s vehicle in the terror attack which occurred during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning, law enforcement officials said.

Badir also hurled petrol bombs at a police car. Police said they later found several more firebombs on the roof of the building where Badir had called them from. The terrorist then entered his car, driving wildly backwards before ramming into a car and into three policemen taking cover behind it. Police opened fire, killing Badir. A knife was later found in his car. Badir’s Karlo submachine gun had jammed and this prevented him from causing greater harm.

Family members claimed that Nadir was “a simple guy, we don’t know how he got a weapon, we don’t believe he was a terrorist.” However surveillance footage from the scene belied their claims.

Police commander Eli Levy said that “this was a serious incident, an attack which ended in a real Chanukah miracle after a gun jamming prevented harm to police and soldiers. This was a clear attempt to harm a representative of the rule of law and due to the determination to make contact and respond quickly, a significant disaster was averted and the terroirist was neutralized.”
