Airlines Raise Baggage Fees as Jet Fuel Costs Surge

Air travelers across the United States are facing rising costs as major airlines roll out widespread increases in checked baggage fees, driven largely by a sharp spike in jet fuel prices tied to ongoing Iran war • Read More

In recent days, carriers including American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue have all raised baggage fees, marking a near-industry-wide shift.

American Airlines, for example, has increased fees by about $10, with travelers now paying around $50 for a first checked bag and $60 for a second on many routes.  Other airlines have implemented similar hikes, with some charging as much as $200 for a third checked bag.

The price increases come as jet fuel costs have surged dramatically—more than doubling in recent weeks—following disruptions linked to conflict involving Iran and instability around key oil routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.  Fuel is one of the largest expenses for airlines, and executives say the sudden spike has forced companies to adjust pricing to maintain profitability.

Rather than significantly raising base ticket prices, airlines are leaning on additional fees—like baggage charges—to offset costs while keeping advertised fares competitive.  Industry analysts note this strategy can make travel appear cheaper upfront, even as the total cost continues to climb.

For passengers, the result is higher out-of-pocket expenses, especially for families and long-distance travelers. With demand for travel still strong despite rising prices, airlines appear confident that customers will continue to fly—even as the cost of doing so steadily increases.
