Next week, a bill defining “Who is a Jew” in the population registry is scheduled for a vote, which would allow the restoration of the nationality field on ID cards. Maoz urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to give coalition members freedom of vote.
During a Knesset discussion attended by Prime Minister Netanyahu, MK Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, sharply criticized former Supreme Court President Aharon Barak for his speech at the left-wing demonstration in Tel Aviv. Maoz called on Netanyahu to “stop the drift toward a state of all its citizens and actively strengthen Israel’s Jewish identity.”
In his speech, Maoz said, “In the liberal democracy, the minority rules. In the true democracy of the Jewish state, the majority decides.” He noted that the Declaration of Independence never uses the word “democracy,” but defines Israel as a Jewish state five times—a fact that Barak systematically ignores.
Maoz highlighted that one of the central expressions of the state’s Jewish sovereignty—the nationality field on ID cards—was removed following a Supreme Court ruling written by Barak about 24 years ago. “That was the first victory of the ‘state of all its citizens’ approach over the Jewish state,” he said, quoting the dissenting opinion of Justice Englard, who warned that this was not a statistical issue but a deep ideological dispute.
He also criticized the Prime Minister directly: “Your government passes many laws regarding democracy and the legal system, but when it comes to the Jewish identity of the state, there is total passivity. The main thing is missing.”
The Noam party leader further stated, “While the Prime Minister successfully leads Israel’s physical defense on seven fronts, on the eighth front—the spiritual survival and Jewish identity of the state—the government is trapped in deep concession to the radical left.”
Toward the conclusion of his speech, MK Maoz announced that next week the Knesset would vote on a bill defining “Who is a Jew” in the population registry, which would enable the return of the nationality field to ID cards. He urged Netanyahu to give coalition members freedom of vote, saying, “Mr. Prime Minister, the power is in your hands.”
