The Unity Sefer Torah concept was created and spearheaded in the 1980s by the Rebbe (in addition to the children’s Sefer Torah), proposing that all Jews join together by purchasing a letter in a “collective” Torah scroll, expressing our inherent unity.
Everyone should have a letter with no set price, and we should sign up ourselves and our family and friends, especially in the year of Hakhel.
The Rebbe said (on Shabbos Parshas Bamidbar 5745) “I’ve spoken about this more than 100 and 1 times!”
Rabbi Moshe Oirechman headed the call and a sofer in Israel penned the first of what became eight Sefer Torah’s to unite the Jewish Nation.
Fast-forward several decades, the project is now completing its ninth Torah scroll in record time, sponsored by world Jewry.
The Ninth Unity Torah is being dedicated for the merit and safety of the people of Ukraine.
A gala celebration in Montreal will be heard and seen the world over today, Sunday, 24 Elul.
The Chabad centers of Quebec (who signed up over 50,000 Yidden), in a joint effort, will be marking the completion of the ninth “Unity Sefer Torah” at the Chabad center of Cote S. Luc (CSL), Montreal directed by Rabbi Mendel and Sarah Raskin—a written Torah scroll whose every letter represents a sponsoring member of Klal Yisroel.
The event will feature international speaker Rabbi Manis Friedman and rising Israeli singer Moshe Louk.
The event also celebrates this year’s closing Hakhel year, whose theme revolves around gathering Jews together for the furtherance of more Torah study and doing of mitzvos.
The event will begin at 7:00 pm at Chabad CSL, 6501 Kildaire in Montreal, and will also be broadcast live at HakhelMTL.org
