New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the DOT announced that it will resume several road redesign projects.

Among the projects in the pipeline is the installation of protected bike lanes along Brooklyn and Kingston avenues in southern Crown Heights, as previously reported on Chabadinfo.

Among the jargon, Mamdani said this is for building “safer streets for New Yorkers who walk, bike, or drive in their own neighborhoods. And this is just the start…”

The DOT announced the new projects will be constructed in the spring.

“More than 10 schools sit within a block of Brooklyn and Kingston avenues in Central Brooklyn. Over the five-year period between 2021 through 2025, the corridors saw 65 injuries, with pedestrians and cyclists accounting for 60% of serious injuries,” the DOT press release stated. “To better protect students traveling to and from school, NYC DOT will install parking-protected bike lanes along both corridors from East New York Avenue to Wingate Park at Winthrop Street. A new protected bike lane loop will also surround Wingate Park.”

    The Plan

As Chabadinfo reported in 2024, the DOT plans to add protected bike lanes—between parked cars and the curb—along Brooklyn and Kingston. The lanes would connect with existing bike lanes on Empire, East New York, and Maple. Also proposed were standard, unprotected bike lanes on Rutland and Fenmore, which would feed into the new protected bike lanes.

According to the original plan, the DOT wants to add pedestrian islands at the intersections, which would eliminate about 2-4 parking spots at each corner, for a total of 54 spots. (This has been done previously in parts of Crown Heights, for example, by Empire Blvd and Kingston Ave).

The aim is to shorten the crossing distance and improve visibility for pedestrians. And add “turn calming treatments (that would potentially) slow drivers and tighten turn radii.”

This is not the first “road diet” the DOT has done to Crown Heights. In the past, the agency added pedestrian islands to Empire and Eastern Pkwy and many bike lanes in the community, including on Kingston Avenue. Recently, the DOT implemented “delayed green” lights at many intersections.

The DOT said at the time that the proposal comes amid concerns from “neighborhood schools and Community Board 9 about speeding and dangerous driver behavior on Brooklyn Ave and Kingston Ave.” They added that drag racing is frequent at Kingston and Winthrop.
