Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the DOT announced an expanded bike lane, called a “bike boulevard,” along the existing bike lane-lined streets along Bergen Street running west and Dean Street running east, which run through Crown Heights.

The redesign will include a “bike boulevard” that prioritizes cyclists over local residents and drivers and will likely eliminate parking spots. The DOT said 10-mile east-west routes “are key cycling corridors” and local vehicle access will be maintained. “Protected bike lanes have been shown to reduce deaths and serious injuries for all road users by 18.1% and for pedestrians by 29.2%,” the DOT claims.

Chabadinfo previously reported several times that the DOT is expected to shortly install similar protected bike lanes on Kingston and Brooklyn Ave (which would eliminate about 54 spots). Community board 8 is pushing to expand it north—half of the Albany Ave bike lane will be painted, the other half will be “protected.”

“Residents in Crown Heights are fearful that NYC will first place the bike lane on Albany and Troy Avenues north of Eastern Parkway,” Assembly candidate Ahron Gluck said on this issue. “Slowly [they will] force a protected bike lane south of Eastern Parkway into the center and heart of Crown Heights.”

The city is also adding standard bike lanes on Rutland and Fenmore and is planning protected bike lanes on Empire Blvd.

The Bergen and Dean Street project will be implemented in phases. The city plans to release a design proposal later this year, with the first phase targeted for installation in 2027.

Notably, the Bergen and Dean route received Automated Camera Enforcement on B15 buses running through Crown Heights.

bikers think they are above the law…they run lights when pedestrians are crossing and they run through buses when mothers step into the street to take the child off the bus
this happened to me too many times each time within split seconds of being hit
