The IDF announced Motzaei Shabbos that Capt. Maoz Yisrael Rekanti HY”D, a platoon commander in Battalion 12 of the Golani Brigade, was killed in battle in southern Lebanon while defending Eretz Yisroel. He was 24 years old.
Rekanti, a resident of Itamar in the Shomron, is the 20th IDF soldier to fall in Lebanon since the launch of Operation “Sha’agas HaAri,” and the seventh soldier killed since the ceasefire began, Hashem yikom damam.
He is survived by his parents and six siblings. Maoz came from one of Itamar’s founding families, deeply rooted in the community and known for their dedication to Eretz Yisroel and Am Yisroel.
Maoz was set to be married in just one month to his kallah, Rani, who studied at a seminary in Itamar. Family and friends were preparing to celebrate the establishment of a new Jewish home before the devastating news arrived.
Shomron Regional Council head Yossi Dagan mourned his loss, saying: “Maoz was among the best of our sons — a courageous officer and devoted fighter who dedicated his life to the security of the Jewish people. The heart breaks over a young life cut short just before building a home. The entire Shomron bows its head and embraces the family during this painful time.”
The announcement came one day after the IDF cleared for publication that Sgt. Negev Dagan HY”D, 20, from Moshav Dekel and also a fighter in Golani Battalion 12, was killed by a mortar strike near the Litani River in southern Lebanon.
