Massive Fire Damages the Alter Rebbe’s Ohel in Haditch; No Injuries Reported

A massive fire broke out late Friday night at the Ohel of The Alter Rebbe, the Baal HaTanya, in the town of Haditch, Ukraine, causing extensive damage to several buildings at the holy site. Among the structures affected were the central Beis Medrash and the hospitality complex operated by the Rebbe’s Shliach, Rabbi Shneur Deitsch, who oversees the site.

The blaze, which erupted shortly before midnight, caused catastrophic damage to the complex. The main Shul sustained losses estimated in the millions of dollars and was effectively destroyed.

Local fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the scene during Shabbos and battled the flames for many hours, preventing an even greater disaster.

Ukrainian police have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze. At this stage, investigators are examining several possibilities, including an electrical malfunction and whether the fire may have been connected to the ongoing security situation in the region amid the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Throughout the year, the Haditch complex welcomes thousands of visitors, guests, and refugees from across Ukraine and around the world. The expansive hospitality center provides lodging, meals, and a wide range of services for those visiting the Alter Rebbe’s Ohel.

Community leaders and Rabbi Shneur Deitsch have begun assessing the damage as they prepare plans to rebuild the destroyed facilities and restore the site’s hospitality services and Beis Medrash as quickly as possible.

Speaking to ChabadInfo, Rabbi Deitsch said:

“We are in total shock. The entire central building of the Ohel, into which we poured our hearts, souls, and our entire lives, has been consumed by fire. The damage is simply beyond comprehension—it is incredibly painful. But Chassidim are not deterred by anything, and certainly as the Rebbe’s Shliach responsible for this holy site, I cannot give up. With Hashem’s help, we will find the strength to rebuild everything. It will take time and money, whatever is required, and we will make it even greater and more beautiful than before. I am confident that Anash around the world will rally to this effort. Above all, we thank the Aibershter that no one was physically harmed.”

Rabbi Meir Stambler, Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU), added:

“The Federation is awaiting the final results of the investigation and remains in close contact with the authorities. We are preparing to provide replacement seforim and sifrei kodesh, as well as other holy items, and we are confident that the Jewish community in Ukraine and throughout the world will help restore this tremendous loss. I would like to thank the fire services and the municipality of Haditch for their dedicated efforts in bringing the blaze under control.”
