After Signing New Agreement: IDF Changes Terms for Kvutza Students

Concern among Kvutza students after the IDF informed them that they must return to Israel following their year of learning in 770, despite an agreement they say was signed guaranteeing the option of serving as Shluchim in Chabad Houses around the world • Read More

A controversy has erupted following a notification from the IDF announcing a change to the arrangements for shlichus after completing their year of learning at the Central Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva in Beis Chayeinu – 770.

According to the bochurim, when they registered for Kvutza, they signed the “Talmid L’Tamid” agreement with the understanding that after completing their year of learning in 770, they would be able to go on shlichus at Chabad Houses around the world before returning to Israel for their military service.

The students say that this arrangement was clearly established in advance: they would spend the academic year in 770, continue for a period of Shlichus overseas, and only afterward return to Israel to begin the next stage of their army service.

However, as the end of the Kvutza year approaches, the students were informed by the IDF that they would be required to return to Israel immediately after their year in 770, and that the Shlichus period would only be permitted within Israel rather than in Chabad communities around the world.

The bochurim say the decision constitutes a violation of the agreement they signed and changes the conditions upon which they based their enrollment in the program. They add that the decision affects many students who had already planned their next stage of Shlichus and prepared to serve Jewish communities overseas.

Following the new instructions, students are expected to return to Israel earlier than originally planned, ahead of their enlistment process.

ChabadInfo has reached out to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit for a response, which will be published once received.
