President Isaac Herzog visited the “Beis Rachel” synagogue in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on Tuesday as part of his official state visit, where he met with the Rebbe’s shluchim serving in the country.
Accompanying the visit were Chief Rabbi of Kazakhstan, shliach Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen, Astana’s rabbi Rabbi Shmuel Karnauch, and other Chabad rabbis active throughout the country.
During the visit, Herzog heard about the vibrant Jewish community and its wide-ranging activities, discussing the challenges they face, efforts to preserve Jewish identity, and the importance of maintaining strong ties with Eretz Yisrael.
He later met with members of the local community at the Chabad Shul, where they Davened for the safety of IDF soldiers and security forces. Herzog expressed appreciation for the community’s dedication to strengthening Jewish life and emphasized the central role of ties between Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.
In his remarks, Herzog said he was moved to visit, reciting the Bracha of Shehecheyanu. He noted the synagogue’s construction by Alexander Moskowitz in memory of his mother, and highlighted Moskowitz’s significant contributions to Jewish life in Kazakhstan.
Herzog also referenced a historical connection between The Rebbe and his grandfather, noting that they studied together at the Sorbonne in Paris and shared a close relationship.
“Chabad’s activities here, in Kazakhstan and around the world, are incredible,” Herzog said. “They preserve Jewish life and connect Jews wherever they are.”
He expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen relations between Israel and Central Asian countries, adding that the timing of the visit carries special significance and optimism for expanded cooperation in the region.
