In the central square of the tourist island of Cozumel, Mexico, a historic Hachnasas Sefer Torah was held last night for the local Chabad House, drawing hundreds of participants – both Jews and locals • Full Story, Photos
The event opened at the Chabad House with the writing of the final letters in the Sefer Torah, after which a colorful procession with singing, dancing, and drummers made its way to the central square. A highlight came when hundreds of Jews and local residents joined together in a moving rendition of “Shir LaMa’alot” in honor of the soldiers and for the release of the hostages – a rare and uplifting moment that deeply touched the crowd.
The Sefer Torah was donated by the parents of the Shlucha, Rabbi Baruch Mordechai and Devorah Sofer, in honor of their loved ones. For the first time in Mexico, the Municipality of Cozumel partnered in organizing and partially funding the Hachnasas Sefer Torah, marking a milestone for Jewish life on the island.
Chabad Shluchim Rabbi Dudi and Chani Kaplan, who have led the Cozumel Chabad House for 16 years, stood at the center of the festivities. Rabbi Kaplan highlighted the importance of observing the Seven Noahide Laws and the broader spiritual impact of the event in strengthening Jewish identity.
Community representative Eddie Ohayon pointed out Cozumel’s unique strategic position as a destination that hosts millions of tourists each year, giving its Jewish community global influence.
Municipal representative Daniela Blanco welcomed the participants, stressed that Cozumel is a safe place for Jews, and even suggested making an annual parade in honor of the Sefer Torah through the city’s streets.
The new Sefer Torah dedication marks a powerful step in strengthening Jewish life in the Caribbean, with many participants describing the event in tears as one of the most moving experiences of their lives.
