After Many Years of Service, ‘Gombo’s’ and ‘Ess N’ Bench’ Close Their Doors
After years of faithfully serving the residents of Crown Heights and the many guests who visit throughout the year, news has emerged of the closure of two iconic neighborhood establishments: Gombo’s Bakery and the eatery Ess N’ Bench • Full Story
Gombo’s Bakery, located since 2009 at the corner of Kingston and President, has officially shut its doors. The property has been purchased by philanthropist Itzik Ben Abuh, who also acquired the adjacent house — the former residence of the late Dr. Feldman.
According to various reports, the entire area is slated to become the site of a new hotel complex, which will cater to the many visitors who flock to Crown Heights year-round — especially during the month of Tishrei.
“It was an honor to serve the Crown Heights community for the past 16 years,” said owner Levi Gombo. “We are exploring the possibility of reopening in another location in Crown Heights. With the blessing The Rebbe gave us — to the bakery and to our family – Gombo’s came to Crown Heights. We look forward to serving the community again in the future.”
Alongside Gombo’s, the fast-food restaurant Ess N’ Bench, located at the corner of Kingston and Union, has also shut down. The eatery had become a popular go-to spot for a quick bite in the heart of the neighborhood.
The restaurant originally opened decades ago in the building that now houses the Jewish Children’s Museum, before closing and taking a 25-year hiatus. In 2016, it reopened at its current location – until this week’s closure.
The reason for its closure has not been officially announced. Online listings currently mark the establishment as “temporarily closed.”
