Trump Administration Sues California Over Egg Price Hike

Filed Wednesday in federal court, the lawsuit challenges Propositions 2 and 12, which ban the sale of eggs in California unless they come from cage-free hens — regardless of where they’re produced. The administration says the rules violate the Constitution by allowing one state to dictate production standards across the country.
“President Trump is standing up for American families and farmers,” said the Agriculture Secretary. “California’s overreach has inflated food prices and hurt the nation.”
Egg prices hit record highs earlier this year amid a bird flu outbreak that led to the culling of over 170 million birds. While prices have since declined, they remain significantly higher than a year ago.
Critics of California’s laws, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, say they reflect a broader trend of liberal policies fueling inflation and overregulation. The Trump administration argues this lawsuit is part of its commitment to restore affordability and protect states’ rights from federal overreach.
Animal rights groups claim the regulations are justified, but Trump officials say it’s time to put American consumers and farmers first.
